ABC Books Privacy Policy
Last updated: October 18, 2026
ABC Books (the website at abcbooks.fyi and the ABC Books app for Fire tablets) is made for children learning to read. We collect as little as possible. This page explains exactly what happens to information when your child uses it.
No ads or tracking
ABC Books shows no ads and contains no analytics or tracking code. We do not sell or share any information with anyone. The free lessons need no sign-up.
What stays on your device
A grown-up adds each reader's first name or nickname on the first screen, and the child taps their name. Those names, the lessons finished, stars earned and blackboard drawings are saved only on your device (in the browser's or app's local storage). They are never sent to us unless a grown-up signs in to a family account (below). Clearing the app's data or the browser's site data deletes them.
Family accounts (optional)
A parent or guardian can create a family account with their email address. We then keep, on our own server: that email address, the readers' first names or nicknames, whether each one is a child or a grown-up, and the lessons finished and stars earned (so they show on every device and in the progress report on the account page). ABC Books blackboard drawings stay on the device. Children do not sign in or give an email; only the grown-up does.
We use the email address only to send sign-in codes and messages about the account. Subscriptions are paid through Stripe, which handles the card details; we never see or store card numbers. To delete the account and everything stored with it, email us from the account's address and we will delete it within 30 days.
Math work
With a paid math plan, the scratch paper a child writes on in Ray's Arithmetic (the Show work button) is saved to the family account as pen lines, together with the question and the answer given. Only the family can see it, on the account page under Math work. A parent can delete any page or a whole book there, and removing a learner deletes all of their work. We keep the newest 3,000 pages per child. Without the plan, the pages stay on the tablet only and are never sent anywhere.
The microphone
In the "Your turn" reading step, the child can tap the microphone and read a line out loud so the app can check which words were read correctly. The device asks your permission before the microphone is used, and you can say no; a grown-up can then mark the words instead.
When the microphone is used, the recording of that one line is sent over an encrypted (HTTPS) connection to our own reading-check server, together with the words of the line. The server turns the speech into words, sends back the words it heard, and immediately discards the audio. Recordings are never saved, never logged, never listened to by a person, and never used for anything else. Recording stops on its own when the child stops talking.
Server logs
Our servers do not keep logs of visits to abcbooks.fyi. Like any website, our servers see your device's internet address while sending a page, but we do not store it.
Children's privacy
We collect children's first names and progress (and, with a paid math plan, their math scratch pages) only when a parent creates a family account, and only to run the lessons, the progress report and the Math work pages. We never share, sell or disclose it. A parent can see it on the account page and ask us to delete it at any time. If you believe information about your child was collected in a way this policy does not describe, contact us and we will delete it.
Changes
If we ever add features that change what is collected, we will update this page and the date above before those features go live.
